We “made” our own barn doors for the upcoming wedding! Let me explain: My daughter is getting married at a rustic, beautiful red barn wedding venue in October. She wanted something special for the backdrop for the actual ceremony but also one that she could keep and use in their new home. We looked at several ideas on Pinterest and finally decided that 2 barn doors would be the perfect background for a barn wedding. We were going to try to make them ourselves; however, we just didn’t have time to start from “scratch”. So, we adapted these doors made from knotty alder that we found at our local Menards.
As you can see, they already have a raised panel on the top, bottom, and sides of each door. All we had to do to get “barn doors” effect was add the cross pieces and … TADA!! We have barn doors! Her dad cut the pieces to fit and attached them with wood glue and small brads. They are exactly what she wanted!
We then stained them and added a coat of polyurethane for protection. We used Dark Walnut stain from Sherwin Williams for a rustic look:
We let them dry and now they are ready for the wedding. While we were staining the doors, we also stained several crates to use as well.
After the wedding, they intend to use the doors as a headboard until they find their “forever” home and then they will use them as actual doors at that time. I will post pictures of them at the wedding… stay tuned for a future post on our other wedding decor!
