Christmas 2017 is now a memory…and as we look forward to the New Year, I like to take a minute a write out some Christmas reflections. I have done this for 4 years now and it is so much fun to look back at each year. (This post may contain affiliate links. On the evening of the 25th of December, I find a quiet place and take a minute to think through Christmas…all of the things that went really well and those that didn’t quite go as I wanted them to! I take a piece of paper and write Christmas 2017 at the top. I then add a header for “Things that went well” and then skip several lines and add a header that says “Things I would change”.
Things that Went Well
Under the “Things that went well” start listing out the good things that happened: maybe you stayed on budget, maybe you found the perfect gift for that hard to buy for person? For me this year, I added a couple of giving categories that were new to me and that really made a difference in my Christmas. I also took some additional time off of work right before Christmas and that really helped with being “done” on time with less stress!
Things that I Would Change
Then, let’s work on the “Things I would change” section. Think through how this year went…what would you change? Maybe add a new tradition…or maybe it’s time to stop doing something that doesn’t resonate anymore with your family? Add more gifts…or maybe simplify? For me this year, I would add slow down and enjoy the little things more…we have babies and I need to simplify some things so we can enjoy them more!
I also then add other comments near the bottom of the page… things like: I need more kiddo wrapping paper, I don’t need to buy bows, be on the lookout for Christmas cards. This helps for when Christmas supplies are being put out and the selection is the best but I haven’t had time to get my Christmas stuff down yet!
One other thing I add is possible gift ideas that came from this year that I don’t want to forget for next year!
There is no right or wrong way to do this… it is just very helpful to do this. I mark my calendar in my planner for October 1st to review the Christmas Reflections page from the prior year. I keep my Reflections page in my planner in the Christmas section! I hope this helps you to organize your thoughts both from this year and looking forward to Christmas 2018!
Just a note…we will be providing a Christmas Reflections printable soon!
