Saving money on pet food has been an ongoing journey for years for me. I can tell you that being a PetPerks Rewards member at PetSmart has saved me hundreds of dollars over the years. I currently budget $60 twice a month and am able to purchase prescription cat food, prescription dog food and a higher quality non-prescription dog food within that budgeted amount each month.
As I wrapped up my last purchase at PetSmart, I realized that the shopping trip would make a great example to show off how much I save! Now, I do not save this much on every pet food shopping trip, but I save quite a bit each time.

Let me break it down for you:
- Hill’s Prescription Diet Cat Food $43.99
- Hill’s Prescription Diet Dog Food $63.99
Subtotal (before discounts and tax) $107.98
- Hill’s Prescription Diet Food Coupon from their website: -$5.00
- PetSmart Email Coupon $40/$100 -$40.00
Subtotal (before tax) $62.98
Next, I applied my PetSmart discount gift card that I purchased from GiftCardGranny.com. The gift card value was $63.03 and I purchased it for $55.47. That is a savings of $7.56. So, continuing my calculation:
Subtotal (before tax) from above: $62.98
Discount Gift Card savings: -$7.56
Actual amount paid (before tax): $55.42
By my calculations, that is a 51% savings!!! What is even more awesome is the fact that the receipt contained a $10 coupon for my next purchase of a Prescription Diet Food.
It is definitely worth becoming a PetPerks reward member at PetSmart if you have one near you.
